fishing-at-duskFishing the flats in a shallow water boat has long been the preferred choice for anglers who don’t want to deal with rough seas or heavy tackle but still want to enjoy the thrill of the chase. So, if you’d like to add a new challenge to your angling experience, then night fishing is the answer! It’s the ideal answer to those unproductive hot summer days and brings completely different fish behavior to the fore, so expect some tenacious and exciting bites. This is a very different type of fishing, so here are some great tips to help make it a rewarding one:

  1. Don’t stand out: Bright lights, colors and large headlamps should be avoided so that you don’t spook the fish. However, this can make watching your line difficult, so it’s best to invest in a black light and fluorescent lines. It’s best to also choose a more sensitive rod and line rather than ultra-light tackle, as this will allow you to sense unseen fish more easily in the dark.
  2. Invest in a small headlamp: This is a nighttime fishing essential as it frees up both of your hands and only emits a limited amount of light. It is also a good idea to choose a red or green light, as these are less alarming to fish.
  3. Prepare in advance: As you are limiting your own ability to see, it’s important to prepare as much as possible before you go into stealth mode. Choose an area you know well, so that you have the advantage of familiarity.       Keep several rods at hand with different lures or baits so that you can change out easily, as you could come into contact with snook, tarpon and much more. Also, if you are prone to backlashes when using bait-casting tackle, try spinning gear at night.
  4. Safety first: With the limited vision that comes with night fishing, it’s important that safety is always the first priority. In addition to standard safety procedures, keep a high-powered flashlight at your side at all times, and always have bow and stern lights on when you’re moving. It is easier to lose your balance on a boat at night, so act with care while moving around and make sure that no hooked lures, ropes and other obstructions can be caught underfoot.
